Does anyone have ideas on fall wedding centerpieces that do not focus on flowers?
It's an excellent idea. Elegant and cheap. Get some rocks/marbles that go with the colors of your wedding to go at the bottom of the bowl and one or two goldfish in each bowl and a few floaty candles and viola, BEAUTIFUL centerpiece. Your local pet supply store should have goldfish for pretty cheap (10-15 cents each) and a lot of places garantee to last at least 2 days, so I'd have a friend get them and set them up during the break from ceremony to reception (you are usually taking pictures and greeting people for a LONG time anyway, so a few friends can get this done)
Micheal's has excellent glass bowls for extremely cheap.
Then have your DJ "give" the bowls away in a fun way. Like the person whose birthday is closest to the wedding date gets to take them home, or whoever has a number under their place, etc. That way you can get rid of the fish and dont have to worry about them at the end of the reception.

Reply:I don't think it's safe for the goldfish to be swimming under floating candles, but I would go with either one. Depending on your colors, you might be able to find fall leaf shaped floaters, or maybe if you go with goldfish, pick glass marbles that are your colors and put them at the bottom of the bowl.
Keep in mind that goldfish don't live well in an environment without a filter/pump. If you want fish, think about Japanese Betas, they can live in that kind of environment, and it's fun to watch them swim, they're so pretty. They may not be your colors, but they'll go over well with your wedding guests. Good Luck!

I like the idea of non-floral centerpieces; it definitely allows you the freedom of earlier preparation without worry of something wilting. You could use a collection of tealights and pillar candles on a low tray filled with polished stones for an earthy, simple arrangement. If it fits the theme of the wedding, you could create an artful collection of gourds and winter squash for the centerpiece, for an autumnal harvest look. Go to antique stores or rummage sales and find vintage candleabras for unique centerpieces for every table. Add chandelier crystal drops for added sparkle, if that vintage/baroque look fits the wedding theme.
Reply:at my sister's wedding they did various wine/champagne glasses with floating candles in them. get various sized and height glasses at Goodwill and thrift stores- find ones with some detail to them also. place about three per table on a mirror (you can rent the mirrors from a party rental place) then get the floating candles and water in them- my sisters had some kind of floating plastic thing that you color the water with food coloring, then use some kind of oil that floats at the top and feeds the flame, then you need the plastic thing that floats the wick- otherwise regular floating candles works too but may not last as long as the oil ones would- you just may want to assign someone to go around later on during the night to replace the candles. you can place some flower petals or pretty glass pebbles around on the mirror also or some smaller glass tea light candle holders that match.
Reply:One wedding I was with they ended up doing these beautiful lead crystal centerpieces that glowed wonderfully when light was under it. You can rent these from a lot of places.
Reply:Two ideas.
1-goldfish in brandy snifter on each table. autumn colored candle ring will fit around the foot of the brandy snifter. Let your bridesmaids be responsible for putting the rings on the snifters. With very little tutoring, they should also be able to manage putting the fish in safely.
(If children are going to run unsupervised, then a fish is safer than a lit candle)
2- Autumn or winter, you can use a bowl of mixed holly and mistletoe.

Reply:Even if you have a tacky raffle and give away the centerpiece, those poor goldfish will most likely be flushed down a toilet.

Reply:Besides goldfish, you could use like little crabs. Those aren't too expensive. Or betas. Betas come in such lovely colors, the red and orangey ones would be lovely for fall. However, don't put two betas together because they'll fight and possibly kill each other.
Reply:At our wedding, which was fall/outdoor themed, we bought vintage milk bottles with a couple rust colored daisies. It was cheap and looked nice. We also took some logs, split them and drilled holes in them and set tea lights in them.
Reply:Here's an idea you could consider. I did a fall centerpiece last year that consisted of a round fishbowl style vase, silk fall colored leaves on a vine, and floating pumpkin candles. I also scattered a few votive candles around the bowl for more light. They were easy to do and looked great. Here is a picture, see the photo with the copper tablecloth. The fall leaf vine is wrapped around the inside of the bowl, it's filled with water and then I used 2 pumpkin shaped floating candles in the middle.

Reply:i know this might sounf weird but i was at a rental place loking fo stuff to rent and i saw this plastic oumkinlooking thing that had all kinds of flowers in the center of it and it was beatiful...i know that is flowers but its different and was reallypretty..they also had like silky burnt orange table colths with a sheer brown over top of it...beautiful
Reply:i have seen those kind of bowls at hobby lobby but they have a hole on top that a plant could go through but u could always cover that with a candle. another cute idea is to buy old lantern like the ones that have 4 glass door on it and put a candle inside.
Reply:I don't know if you'd want to go to the bother of having live fish. Especially if you have children that are more than likely going to be interested in the aquatic marvels and try to stick their hands in the bowls. You can still do the floating candle bowl, but maybe float hand-painted candles in them instead, and surround them with fall-colored leaves. Plus if you have live goldfish in every bowl, where are you going to put them AFTER the wedding? (plus fish poop in your nice pretty bowls, etc).

Reply:The thing with the fish is really nice, but then you have a whole bunch of goldfish left over at the end. I had a fall wedding and made all my own centerpieces. I used terracotta pots, put a twig wreath around the base and decorated them with fall leaves, then put the champagne in the terra cotta pot. My other plan was the carve out pumpkins and put the champagne bottles in those instead. I also cut the centers out of mini pumpkins and put candles in them.
