I am doing my own flowers for my wedding and I'd really love some advice from someone who has done this before. They are arriving on a Thursday and the wedding is on a Saturday. I am wondering what I should do right when they arrive? Just cut them and clean them and keep them in vases? Should I make the bouquets the day of the wedding? Also, where is the best place to store them? I've heard in a small room with the air conditioner on but I've also heard in the fridge?! Details would be greatly appreciated :) THANKS!
Doing my own wedding flowers?
Number 1 - the fridge you keep your food in is not the same as the cooler we keep our flowers in - a fridge reduces humidity and can freeze the flowers if any part touches the sides. The only thing you can put in the fridege is corsages adn bouts that have been put in plastic bags (to prevent moisture loss) and are in the lower center of the fridge. Also fruit put off Ethelene gas which kills flowers so remove fruit (especially apples) before putting any flowers in the fridge.
Number 2 : proper conditioning of flowers is done by having the correct temp of water (in general this is bath water warm except for bulb flowers) with preservative (the powder flower food). Remove any foliage that would be below the water line and cut at an angle and immediatly place stems in water. Allow to drink for an hour or two then add ice to the water to cool down and place in a cool draft free area until you need to use them.
Number 3: make bouquets the day before and place in water (if they have stems) and set in a cooler chest with a layer of ice in the bottom - cover securely- this will keep the flowers at about the same temp as my cooler.
Number 4: I did my own flowers for my wedding - I know what I am doing and had been doing flowers for years at that time - I still wish I would have had someone else do them to reduce my stress and allow me to just enjoy my wedding and rehearsal.
Wishing you a stress free and memorable wedding day!
Reply:Keep them in a fridge or cold room if possible. Then make the bouquests and what not the morning of. Reclip the ends to help then stay fresh.
Reply:Call a florist= )
Reply:Are you sure you can't have them delivered on the Friday? The lifespan of a cut flower is short anyway - especially in the summer months. But if this isn't possible...
A fridge is very good for keeping flowers fresh. This is how a lot of florists keep them fresh. If you don't have a fridge big enough, then perhaps your venue can store them for you in their friedge (if they have one, obviously a church won't). Otherwise just leave them in the coolest place you can find.
I'm doing this for my wedding. I also heard that searing the ends in a frying pan does well to keep them perky. They will turn blackened from the searing, but you can just cut off the ends on the morning of the wedding to ensure they look lush again.
Otherwise, if you're putting them in a vase for a couple of days, then put lemonade in instead of water, or if you don't have lemonade, just put copius amounts of sugar in the water. Flowers will last a lot longer with this extra kick. Trust me on this one; I've tested the theory numerous times, and it's worked without fail.
