I am getting married mid August 2008 on the border of umbria and tuscany. Please can you tell me what kind of flowers I can expect to be in season? Thanks x
What flowers are in season in August for a wedding in Italy?
Congratulations on your wedding.
Italian summers are very hot and relatively dry, so by mid-August nothing much is very "in season" except for the grapes ripening on the vine.
Yes, Tuscany and Umbria are known for their sunflowers and poppies but neither will be in season in August. Sunflowers are usually finished by late July and poppies much earlier than that, usually June -- and besides, poppies are not suitable for a wedding as they only grow in the wild and will wither in about 15 minutes once picked (even if placed in water).
As in most places in the world, any flower can be available through a good florist any time of year. I understand that you are probably looking for something regional to give your wedding a more authentic feel. Again a florist could help -- I can tell you these days in the florist about the only cut flowers I see are Gerber daisies and roses.
Often to give a wedding a "Tuscan feel," couples will use olive branches or small potted olive trees as well as grape vines and grape bunches (not ones destined for good wine though!).
If you would like more help in your planning (flowers, legalities, photographer, etc.) let me know, I was married in Florence (where I live) and have helped many couples get married and honeymoon here.
***ADDED***
It just occurs to me that Italians use orange blossoms very frequently for weddings. Summer doesn't seem to be the season for orange blossoms, but again a good florist can get what you want at any time of year.
Reply:Roses and garofani are use for weddings in Italy. Dont' use crisantemi..in England are very popular but in Italy are only use in cementery.
Reply:in august i think the only tuscan flowers i can recall seeing are the sunflowers. but i think in the middle middle of august they die out by then, the best time to see them is during early august. be very careful they can be pretty allergic. ive been living there since 2002 in florence i mean, and last summer i was driving by the country side with my bf and there were billions of these sun flowers everywhere, since my parents were coming in a couple of days we decided to sneak up and yank a couple, we thought it was an easy task...but it wasnt. they were thicker than ever and ofcourse we tried to do it as soon as possible not letting anyone see us. by the time we snatched 3-5 of them we put them up front and made a run for it. since it was a hot summer, i was wearing sandals, a skirt, and a tanktop. as we drove off you wont believe it but i got this humongous allergy attack alll over my body! it was horrible!! i couldnt help scratching myself everywhere and i was literally dieing! so that was it, i paid my fees for stealing those 3 darn sun flowers...never again will i do that.
about poppies i think yes, you do see a little bit of those, but they are not really close to the tuscan area, they are a litte bit more down south close to assisi, around that area. the only thing is that they are not yellowish orange as you usually see, they are instead red, beautiful red and dont worry, they are not allergic at all, ive been there, snatched them and yes..they are all wild flowers, beautiful!
have a great time there and have a great wedding!!
Reply:Hello, I'm italian and I live in Umbria. In that period there are the sunflowers, but for the middle august these have withered. We usually use the white roses for the woman's flowers who must hold in hand. However all types of flowers are found nearly! Excuse for my English!
Reply:i dont know but i have to tell u that im so happy ofr you even thoguh i hav no clue who u r because italy is GORGEROUS and you're getting married there! congrats!! :-)
Reply:i got married in rome. i wanted roses and thats what i got. a florist can order any flowers you want if you give advance notice.
Reply:Aug - Sept. it's actually holiday seasons; esp. Sept. whereby many ppl go to beach/summer holidays.
You can expect plenty types of flowers wht's famous in Europe BUT since you're getting married; why not ask your love one what types of flowers she adores?
You can also ask your church/hotel if you can get a cheaper budget for the supplement of flowers %26amp; what type they can get esp. since I believe you %26amp; your entire friends/relatives will be going there as well so you can get a good price for it ;)
Congrats!
Reply:They dont have anything special but up in that region there is major sunflowers and they are beatiful. So thats what I would go for,
Reply:I think that sunflowers are frequet in tuscany and also poppies
